The Netherlands has returned a stolen Benin artefact to the Benin Kingdom, 129 years after British troopers looted 1000’s of treasures throughout the 1897 invasion.
The historic piece was formally introduced on the Oba’s palace in Benin City on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
The handover coincided with celebrations marking the tenth anniversary of the coronation of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II.
